Lowell Celebrates Senior Night With Dominant Win Over Hobart by Scotty Forrester Freelance Reporter Senior night was one to remember for Lowell guards Aubrey Fleming and Hayden Blocker, as the Devils rolled past Hobart 58–25 in impressive fashion. Fleming led the Devils with 15 points, while Blocker, a six-foot guard returning from injury, showed she is ready to contribute down the stretch as Lowell prepares for the upcoming sectional tournament. Head coach Kelly Chavez’s squad looks to be rounding into form at the right time, shaping up to be a tough out in the postseason. Fleming played her role to perfection—getting open, squaring up on her shot, knocking down baskets, and bringing relentless effort on the defensive end. Lowell wasted no time asserting control, opening the game with a 14–0 run. Blocker ignited the scoring by drilling a three-pointer from the corner. Gatlin Hanrath followed with a basket off a crisp pass, and guard Brooke Dawson scored off a Hobart turnover as the Devils jumped out to a 7–0 lead. Hanrath scored again inside to make it 9–0, then Fleming buried a three off another Brickie turnover to push the lead to 12–0. Lowell continued to attack inside, finding the 6-foot-2 Hanrath, who drew a foul and calmly knocked down both free throws to make it 14–0 with 4:02 remaining in the first quarter. Hobart finally got on the board when Chesnie Unland hit a jumper, but Lowell responded immediately. Alivia Madison drained a three-pointer after a well-designed set play, featuring a strong screen from Blocker, extending the lead to 17–2. The Devils continued to force turnovers—five in the quarter—building a 22–5 advantage with Blocker scoring underneath to close the period. Lowell stretched the lead to 18 points before Hobart freshman Taryn Babcock connected on a three to make it 28–13. Dawson answered right back, teaming up with Tatum Claus and finishing a smooth cut to the basket for a 30–13 lead. With 1:45 left in the first half, Fleming knocked down another corner three, sending Lowell into the locker room with a commanding 35–13 halftime lead. Coming out for the second half, Dawson delivered a pinpoint pass to Hanrath for an easy bucket, pushing the lead to 37–15. The Devils kept the pressure on, forcing two more turnovers. Josephine Laub buried a three-pointer from the outside, and Hanrath scored again on a well-executed out-of-bounds play to extend the lead to 46–18. Fleming capped the third quarter with a three from the top of the key, giving Lowell a 49–21 advantage heading into the final period. Lowell forced six more turnovers in the fourth quarter, finishing the game with 22 forced turnovers. Fleming put the finishing touches on her senior night performance, scoring her final points on a fast-break basket to seal the 58–25 conference victory. After the game, Fleming reflected on the win: “I thought we really came out and set the tempo, jumping out to a 14–0 lead after the first four minutes. My shot felt good tonight—I squared myself up, and my teammates found me when I was open. All of us are getting better and better as we look forward to finishing the season on a high note and defending our sectional title.” Josephine Laub, who continues to elevate her play this season, also shared her thoughts: “I’ve really worked hard on my shot and what I need to do for my team over the summer. My calmness on the court and moving the ball are things I’ve improved, along with knocking down open shots. I like getting assists just as much as scoring, and our spacing makes it easier to move the ball without turning it over.” Head coach Kelly Chavez praised both her seniors and the team’s overall performance: “I’m just happy the seniors were able to have a successful night. I liked how we broke the zone offensively with multiple looks, and the ball pressure defensively that caused 22 turnovers. We also shot the ball well, with multiple players contributing as we continue to move forward this season.”
